how can I prevent my laptop from shutting off when I want to switch from ac to battery and vice versa?
Currently when I plug in my battery, and remove the ac power the laptop immediately switches off

Yes of course - that is a general problem afflicting _all_ laptops running arch .... NOT!
It's akin to say: "I have a problem - please help"
You have to give us a bit more to chew on, like make/model of your laptop.
That being said - one thing one can do is to remove the battery completely, wait some few secs and then insert it again. Somehow that seems to 'reset' things, but don't ask me how/why ...
[edit]
sheeesh - I didn't read the original post properly ...
If I take literally what you write - you remove the battery when running on ac and vice versa?
Well - in that case you are left hanging there with absolutely no power for a sec or two - he he he

If that happened to me, I would conclude that the battery was discharged. Can we assume that is not the case?

You didn't read the original post properly again, what I meant was:
Step 1) laptop is currently running on ac
Step 2) I plug in battery
Step 3) I plug out the connector to my laptop
Step 4) The laptop switches off

after plugging in, did you check the presence of the battery? was it charging or fully charged?
When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane I say.

unregistered - please don't bump this again. This is an issue with your hardware, not with Arch. You should look for support resources elsewhere that are more relevant to your requirements.
