Keyboard unresponsive for ~10 seconds after reaching console login

My laptop keyboard stops responding to anything once I leave grub and continues not to respond until 10 or so seconds have passed just sitting at the console login.  It's always been like this and it seems I'm not the only one to experience it either: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69775 http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38676

By digging around in /sys, I've found that the keyboard is an "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard" on an "i8042 KBD port" using the builtin "atkbd" driver.

I really have no idea what the problem is...:/

And I just realized, caps/num/scroll lock and the touchpad switch lights don't respond during that time either, so I don't believe it's a problem with agetty.
