My machine:
Asus laptop, C2D 7200 - 2.0 Ghz, 2 GB DDR2 667 Mhz, Nvidia 8400M G
Test:
Nexuiz demo1, 2, 3
With same config, for all tests. Test are done few times, just to make sure.
What does "cc" mean? - Custom compiled
cflags - [ "-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -floop-interchange -floop-strip-mine -floop-block"]
xorg is compiled with [ "-march=core2 -O3 -pipe -floop-interchange -floop-strip-mine -floop-block"]
Nexuiz is compiled with [ "-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -floop-interchange -floop-strip-mine -floop-block"]
Xorg.conf is stock, done with nvidia-xconfigure and only thing I added is NoLogo "True"

demo3 - 117 fps
- Test 2
xorg 1.6.1.901 - cc

mesa 7.4.2 - cc
kernel 2.6.29-4 -cc

- Test 4

mesa 7.4.2 - cc
kernel 2.6.30-1 - cc
demo1 - 81 fps
demo2 - 103 fps
demo3 - 106 fps
As you can see, kernel 2.6.29 and nvidia 180.51 are one happy couple.
Nvidia 180.60 maybe brings fixes for bugs I've never seen but it does have impact on 3D performance.
New kernel improves general performance, but it is slightly slower in 3D.
New nvidia drivers reduces 3d performance, but decreases heating and improves 2D.
Any more ideas how to maximize 3D performance?

Did you try the 185.* beta drivers?
Offline
There is no beta in 185 series.

In last test 185.18.14 was used.

I dont recommend 185.18.14, it is unstable (system freezes and xorg lockups) compared to 185.18.10, 185.18.10 was rock solid for me.
I saw that 185.18.14 made it into testing now but i hope they wont promote it to extra.

Ok, tried with 185.18.10
demo1 - 81 fps
demo2 - 104 fps
demo3 - 107 fps
Slightly faster
