Hello once again!
Now that I have managed to install GNOME and get online, I'd like to be able to run Java applets. I have installed the OpenJDK, and have managed to run my own Java applications both with Eclipse and terminal. I am using Epiphany and I'm not sure how to enable Java there.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I also have tried these applets on Firefox, but they didn't work there either.

So I need Sun's Java to be able to run web applets?

In some cases, yes.

Too bad. I can't remove OpenJDK because JRE is required by Eclipse, and Sun's JRE conflicts with OpenJDK. Do I have to remove Eclipse to get Sun's JRE?

You could try:
pacman -Rd openjdk6
That will skip dependency checks so that you can uninstall OpenJDK without removing Eclipse, then install Sun JRE/JDK.

I switched back to OpenJDK since Sun's JRE didn't work with Eclipse. Applets didn't work with Sun's JRE either.

start your browsers from comand line and watch for helpfull output. usually the plugins can show the applets. openjdk6 is doing a great job here.

I don't seem to have a Java plugin and I can't for some reason install one (needs a loving touch of the root user perhaps?). For example, this page http://www.ibiblio.org/lifepatterns/ has a Java start button in the top left corner. It is replaced bya "click here to download plugin" box, which doesn't react to clicking. I didn't receive any output from the terminal.

With Sun's version installed, you might want to look on about:plugins in Firefox (maybe Epiphany has this too?) and see if you find the plugin. If not you could create a symlink to the plugin in Epiphany's plugin folder. The JRE plugin is located at /opt/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so.
For Eclipse you may just need to change some paths around from OpenJDK to Sun Java.

The button works well for me in Firefox. Please make sure once you have installed openjdk6 to relogin or source the profile file as stated in the pacman post.install message!

On Firefox, the button worked. It produced a window that told me that I could not install plugin. On Epiphany, the button didn't reaspond.
Ok I think I've got it figured out now - I installed KDE because I had issues with GNOME and foudn a way to do it on Konqueror. Thanks for all your help!
