why hasnt anyone tried to get rid of xorg?

and tried to create a graphic interface directly on top of the framebuffer?

is there any tecnical issue why this hasnt been done? besides the fact that its a start from scratch?

There are some WM/DEs (e.g. Xfce) capable running on top of framebuffer.
