Problems with fglrx

Hi!
I'm quite new to archlinux (installed it 3 days ago) but, other than the fglrx module, everything is working smoothly.
Well, I need the driver from ATI because I have the HD4850 card, and without power saving or 3D acceleration this card is nearly useless.
So, I've downloaded catalyst and catalyst-utils from AUR (the catalyst package indicated in the wiki), compiled and installed it. When I try to insert the module fglrx into the kernel, it says "error inserting fglrx: (...) operation not permitted". And yes, I did run modprobe as root.

Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed, just ask.
TIA
Khristian

Re: Problems with fglrx

Make sure you don't have the "radeon" module loaded.

Re: Problems with fglrx

I uninstalled the radeon module, and it did solve the inserting problem. Now, when I try to test it with startx, a bunch of errors show up about some bus device not being found at various different bus addresses, and finally says  it aborted because the "specified depth (8) is not supported by driver fglrx".
I tried using startx with --depth=16 and --depth=24, but with 16 it showed the same message, and with 24 it froze everything.
It does work with radeon, so I'm still lost here hmm

Re: Problems with fglrx

it would be usefull to post xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Problems with fglrx

Use "aticonfig" to generate an xorg.conf that this driver likes.

all it did was change the driver to "fglrx", but i'll try it anyway. when I do, I'll post the logs too.

Re: Problems with fglrx

Hi, I also use the ATI Catalyst Driver 9.5. But in order to use my 4890 I had to downgrade my kernel to 2.6.28.8 and remove the 2.6.29 patch from the catalyst package. At the moment everything runes fine. But the same graphic card in another system causes the system to freeze if I use 3d applications.

Could you be more specific? I downgraded to kernel 2.6.28 and removed the patch from the PKGBUILD for the module, but it still doesn't work.

Re: Problems with fglrx

What do you mean with it doesn't work. Are the kernel messages gone? Or freezes you system if you use 3d applications?
I have tested my graphic card in 2 other 64bit systems, both system have only pcie 1.0 x16, both system freezes randomly with Archlinux 2.6.28/2.6.29 and Ubuntu 9.04 (i386/amd64). Sorry for my late answer, I was very busy at work.

Re: Problems with fglrx

It compiles, but I can't use the driver with Xorg. When I try "Xorg -configure" it exits with signal 11. If I insist, either xorg freezes the machine completely or it doesn't start.
I also tried using the ARM to rollback as far as I could, with no success.

I didn't even try it with a 64 bits system yet, and I probably won't. Already went back to Ubuntu, at least my video card doesn't go at 100% the whole time.
