[Solved] Grub being a weirdo...

So I now do not understand grub.

I thought that if I install Arch on sdb1 that it would be hd1,0 right?

Now I get to an installation where this is not the case.

sdb1=hd0,0 on my friends Desktop.

Is this my misconception that sdb1 is suppose to be hd1,0?

Re: [Solved] Grub being a weirdo...

I think you're correct.  sdb1=(hd1,0) and sda1=(hd0,0)

From: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual … convention

     (hd0,1)

Here, `hd' means it is a hard disk drive. The first integer `0' indicates the drive number, that is, the first hard disk, while the second integer, `1', indicates the partition number (or the pc slice number in the BSD terminology). Once again, please note that the partition numbers are counted from zero, not from one. This expression means the second partition of the first hard disk drive. In this case, GRUB uses one partition of the disk, instead of the whole disk.

I hope this helps, more than it confuses.

Re: [Solved] Grub being a weirdo...

oh I think I know why sdb1 is hd0,0 because in bios the order of the HDDs were changed.

So sdb1 may be connected to the second slot in the motherboard but the motherboard bios sees it as the first HDD.
