i want to install xf86-input-synaptics for the touchpad on my laptop do i type it in as "pacman -Sy xf86-input-synaptics"? i dont know if i put -Sy, or -Ss or whatever

The easiest way to find out would be to type it in...
The second easiest would be to type 'man pacman'.
But yes, -Sy will do the trick.

extra/xf86-input-synaptics 1.1.2-1; Try to 'pacman -Sy' first, and then 'pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics'.
'pacman -Sy' gets repos synched, 'pacman -Ss package_name' searches. Read the wiki page for Pacman.

box2: Gentoo (linux-3.17-rc5)

Yeah... I will add my recommendation again to create your own account rather than continuing to use that one.

p.s. My son just started using Linux and it is obvious he logged in using my account. I'll try to assist him in setting up his own account.

Considering the content of your post, your profile photo is rather amusing!
