Arch on Eee PC

Had this last week and a reboot solved the problem.
Also I don't know why alsa only shows pcspkr.:(
Seems to initialize the soundcard in a wrong way.:/

But for now everything is working perfect.
Also the wifi toggeling and so.
It's a long time ago, that I've seen my eee working like this and it's working like a charm...

For any Assistance I'm willed to help!:P

Yeah, now it's working again and I haven't hit the issue... strange... maybe it was an issue with my kernel version at the time.

I have a problem with my eee (701 4g) dumping me back to console when I start X. It will work eventually but takes several tries and gives seemingly random segfault error messages. Also when I try to start thunar or firefox they often crash. I've heard of people having this problem with firefox and fixing it by have it cache onto a ramdisk which is an easy solution but I am not so sure about X...

Are you completely up to date on all packages? With a lot of changes in X and kernel land lately dealing with graphics, I'd be weary of running a half-updated system.

toofishs: This was a bit of a preemptive post. I am planning on updating and seeing how it works. However, my internet connection AND electrical situation is fairly spotty (Yay off the grid life) AND I've had this problem with the EEE for it's whole existance. I'm beginning to wonder if it has some bad hardware. I will update and see how things happen from then on.

Have all packages up to date and everything is running quite well.
No need for xorg.conf!;)
Only done som configuration in hal!:rolleyes:

Will post my system as soon as I have got some spare time!
For now you could tell me which files you would need (config's for example the rc.conf or acpi/handler.sh and stuff like this) to configure your eee to perfection...

Is the error message:

[drm:i915_gem_detect_bit_6_swizzle] *ERROR* Couldn't read from MCHBAR. Disabling tiling.

during boot expected with latest toofishes kernel and a 701 4g?

X also throws errors about tiling but starts up:

Toofishes: The computer is better with updates! Though it will still hard crash every so often... Its a good thing I mostly just use it for fun.

Hi, I yesterday I've manage to install archlinux on my Eee pc 900. I installed the stock kernel, with xfce. Everything works just fine instead of pm-suspend. It suspend my machine properly, but after resume it restarts my netbok, I see the grub ! What is wrong ? Should I edit something and change ?

Hi lgolebio,

First of all, congratulations for your choice.:D
Arch is the best.

Had the same Problem and fixed it with the following.

You have to install uswsusp from COMMUNITY.
After this edit /etc/supend.conf and add your roopt device.

Rebuild you initrd and let it rock!!!:lol:

Problem solved, I've reainstalled arch, probably I've messed up some config files in my system. That's no problem, reinstalling system took only 2 hours. Now everything works just fine with pm-suspend. However thanks for reply. This is my second laptop with arch. I'm also using Dell M1530 with arch for about a year.

Eee pc 900 (new versions) have very slow SSD 16GB disks, and there is no internal SSD like in 12GB version (4GB + 8GB). With xcfe4 it works good enough, but with gnome or kde, it's unusefull.

I wonder if there's a possibility to speed up system with more RAM.

I have 904hd.

no swap partition

is any way to fix it without rebuilding initrd...?

Everything looks just fine. Try to update Bios. I think it's Bios related problem.

Does anyone know some application that is system tray, where I can change some things regarding eeepc or turn bluetooth on and off, etc. ?

I am using acpi-eeepc-generic scripts, so it should be comaptible.

The kernel-eee from toofishes is great but has problems with eee 900. From version kernel-eee-2.6.30-2 he has enabled KMS by default, and since then, the computer is not able to wake-up from sleep, and to use external display on VGA.
This has been reported to kernel bugs but nobody seems to mind. See http://www.toofishes.net/blog/kms-kernel/

You don't need specific packages to run Arch on EeePC 900. Standard kernel works fine without KMS. Maybe you could say what's wrong...?

Oh yes it works. I understood that since this is by default in the kernel config file it couldn't be deactivated.
But it does not really changes the fact that KMS is quite unusable with an i915 laptop. On the other hand, not using KMS is not acceptable either, because 3D performance is very low, quite inexistant.
For some time, with old versions of Xorg and xf86-video-intel, it was as nice as now with KMS for performances.
So the choice is either you have 3D and no sleep, either you have sleep and no 3D.

As of recent upgrade of toofishes kernel (2.6.30.5eee) on my Eee 701, my laptop no longer boots up or shuts down correctly when the power is unplugged (battery mode). It works fine when the power cord is plugged in. Am I missing some new module or script?
My module list is:
