Hello everyone!
I have just installed Arch x86_64 and I'm using a nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000].
I'm running the command nvidia-xconfig to set up my xorg. Then I uncommented the line exec gnome-session in my .xinitrc. When run the command startx I get the following:
[root@work ~]# startx
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.16103
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority

Why do you want a xorg.conf if X is working without one?
p.s Starting X as root is never good

Hi!
Why do you want a xorg.conf if X is working without one?
That's really a good question. But firstly, how come I run the X without a xorg.conf? I thought it wasn't possible. And I wonder if I'm gonna miss the file at some point in the
future, whenever I try to run compiz effects for example.
p.s Starting X as root is never good
Oh, actually I made all my tests with a regular user... last time I was remotely logged via ssh and I just wanted to see the message again.

X has always done a good job for me of autodetecting settings.I wouldnt worry about having a xorg.conf if everything is ok without one.The other thing you could try is letting X itself configure the file instead of nvidia-xconfig if that is giving you problems
Xorg -configure

Try to re-install thhe xorg's modules with pacman.

Problem solved! I just noticed that I hadn't check which nvidia version I was using, as the log says:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 GPU installed in this system is
(WW) NVIDIA(0): supported through the NVIDIA 96.43.xx Legacy drivers.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for

(WW) NVIDIA(0): this GPU. Continuing probe...
And in fact I was using the 180.51 driver. Then I did the following:
# pacman -Rd nvidia nvidia-utils
Then:
# pacman -S nvidia-96xx nvidia-96xx-utils
And it's working now!
Thank you guys
