Xorg 1.6 won't start, ext3-fs won't mount, kinit kernel panic.

I've spent several hours today looking through the wiki and previous forum posts, trying to understand what went wrong with my new Arch install. I need some help.

I have an IBM Thinkpad X40. I followed the installation guide, which was quite helpful until we came to X. There my troubles began: X wouldn't start with the config file generated by

Xorg -configure

and patching the xorg.conf as suggested in the official install guide didn't help. Apparently the problem is not (directly) related to the driver: neither the intel nor intel-legacy drivers made any difference I could see.

Starting X without an xorg.conf got me stuck in a non-input-accepting state as described in this forum post: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73657

Worse, when I had to power-cycle the machine, I'm now unable to boot. I get a lot of lines like:

ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
ata1.00: error: { UNC }
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Unhandled sense code

... ending with:

JDB: Failed to read block at offset 583
JDB: recovery failed
EXT3-fs: error loading journal.
kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(8,4)
kinit: init not found!

So now, before I can hope to make X work, I need to fix this. Can anyone help me get my filesystem back, using the 2009.02 install image on my usb drive? Worst case, I'd have to reinstall the whole thing: no data loss, just inconvenient. Ok, maybe worst case is that my hard drive is dying (ext3.fsck did find quite a few bad blocks during the install). I'm in over my head, anyway.

Thanks...  - max

Eeeeek!
I would boot from a live cd and run a fsck on the drive - at least for starters.
Hopefully this will fix the disk, but if it doesn't - hey - a new disk is a no-brainer these days :-)

Come back again when the disk is OK and we'll look at your other problems

Re: Xorg 1.6 won't start, ext3-fs won't mount, kinit kernel panic.

The installer image utility wasn't able to mount the root partition... but, when I ran through the install sequence again and overwrote the partition, and then checked it, fsck didn't complain at all. So, I'm going to assume that the problem was in software.

Now I'm back to a fresh base install. How can I make Xorg 1.6 start?

Re: Xorg 1.6 won't start, ext3-fs won't mount, kinit kernel panic.

You need to give us the xorg.conf file _and_ the result of 'lspci'.
My guess is that you have not installed the appropriate driver for your graphics adapter.

Re: Xorg 1.6 won't start, ext3-fs won't mount, kinit kernel panic.

I've installed the xf86-video-intel-legacy driver package, which seemed to be the appropriate one for my Intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device, but here's my whole lspci output anyway:

Xorg detected your mouse at device /dev/input/mice.
Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.

Xorg has configured a multihead system, please check your config.

Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new

To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'

Re: Xorg 1.6 won't start, ext3-fs won't mount, kinit kernel panic.

Just out of curiosity - did you copy /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

If you did - it looks all good to me ...

It might be an idea to remove completely your 2nd monitor until you have got X to work with _one_.

I have a 82915G/GV/910GL intel graphics controller - and _my_ xorg.conf is as follows:
