Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

What I'm talking about is a Virtualization framework for home use, as opposed to huge server use
I'm sure I've seen something of this description somewhere, but for the life of me I can remember neither where I found it, nor what it's called sad.

Ofc there's a chance that I just dreamed the whole thing tongue

Anyone got a clue what I'm on about? smile

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

No I mean something that is in place of the OS, not something to install onto an OS.
It was something that I can install more than one OS onto
I know about VirtualBox tongue

XD Not grub, it was virtualization tongue
I think it was either Xen, as ataraxia said, or something similar.

It may not have been so important, but still, a more descriptive subject would have been nice. wink

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

I'm pretty sure it was KVM that I saw before, now after a few hours of research. tongue But @rine: ESXi looks interesting too smile
But I have a question:
The documentation seems aimed at getting the install on a server, and then using client PCs to view the VMs....
But can I use the Server to *view* the VMs aswell as manage them?

hseu - as already mentioned, please use a more descriptive topic when posting. THe topic should summarise the subject you want to discuss.

It's not too late to amend it. There is still time!! smile You can go back to the original post and update the subject with something about virtualisation.

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

KVM is good. Very easy to get working but I have been using VirtualBox of late. It is a more polished product and quite nifty. Have a look at both and make your mind up.

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

Yeah KVM is really good but as mikesd said, Virtualbox is just a little more polished and a little easier to use at the moment.
Personnaly I don't see a performance difference between KVM and Virtualbox.

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

Isn't KVM direct competition for XEN as they are both server oriented, while Virtualbox is a desktop solution? That's the way I unterstood it.

Re: Looking for a barebones Virtualization system

I think I will take a look at KVM and, if it's not what I expected, I'll go back to vbox.

I've also looked at ESXi, and in the long run I think I will set up a network in the house using this.

The only reason I'm using VMs at all at the moment is because of the lack of a stable driver for my sound card. but that's for another topic (of which there are already thousands of posts on various forums, so there's no point)

I was hoping for some kind of magic where I could have a 'hypervisor' (or w/e it's called) that supports my sound card xD, and then to install guests onto that, thus enabling (at least some) audio in arch hmm

Oh well, thanks guys smile, I'll have to stick with a Windows installation and linux guests until I can get some money for a new audio card.

Topic can be closed at will of a mod.
