SOLVED - restore file permissions

A backup of an entire system has lost some file permissions - the how and why is already being dealt with. I wondered, whether the missing permissions can easily be restored.

I can only think of the tree command on a working system and then doing everything manually tongue I don't fancy that...

Has anybody got a better idea? I checked both wiki and the forum but nowhere nearer to a solution yet sad
