Synaptics touchpad not working

I am using an acer aspire 5500z. USB mouse works fine but trackpad doesnt work, even after installing xf86-input-synaptics. It seems to disable the keyboard whenever I try to use my trackpad forcing me to do a hard reboot. Any idea on how to get my trackpad to work?

How's my programming? Call 1-800-DEV-NULL

Whats the output of Xorg.log?

(You can try to start your kernel with a "3" added to the grub line, then it will not boot into X to avoid changing the Xorg.log's)

Do you use an Xorg.conf, or rely entirely on hal -detection of devices?

I rely on hal to detect hardware. Is Xorg.log supposed to be located in /etc/X11? Its not there, probably because I don't use Xorg.conf.

Edit: Silly me, I discovered that I in fact had an Elantech touchpad. Not a Synaptics touchpad.
I'm having the exact same problem as this guy:
