What happened to hwd and what is the replacement?

I just built a new machine and was installing arch onto it.  I have always used hwd to see what the system is reporting is out there and to get a basic xorg.conf file, but hwd apparently no longer exists.  I found a posting or 2 about it going away, there's a better way, etc., but am not finding any real information about why it's gone or what the better way is.  Can someone fill me in?

Yeah it was obsolete and generated broken Xorg configs.

Xorg can now run without a config, or if you need one you can now generate one with "X -configure"

hwdetect in extra can provide driver information, although udev typically does a good job of loading any necessary modules.

For xorg, use "X -configure".  You will have to let us know what other information you want to find in order for us to help with that...

Is there a way to stop compositing with the nvidia driver with hal (need it to make VDPAU work without tearing)? It's the only reason I still use an xorg.conf

Just use nvdia-beta from aur. This is stable driver (at least nvidia claims that) which supports VDPAU with composite.

I would use hwd for a summary of the machine, sometimes, when I need to figure out what's in there.  For example, hwd -s gave a nice list.  I suppose it's all in /proc and I can go look it up, but it was nice to get a listing like that.  I suppose it would be good to know where I go for that now, other than to pull up the information piece by piece.

Hwd is still in aur. Just install it with yaourt.
