Hi.
Sometimes when I use VMware server my shift/ctrl/alt key don't work within arch. In the virtual machine everything works well. I tested a lil bit but I found nothing causing this problem.
The only solution I found was a new login. Perhaps its a KDE problem but my friend google didn't help me...
Can anybody help me?
Thanks, Andreas

Hey man, i have the same problem when i use VMware-server-console or VMware Workstation 6.0.1 on my arch. I use RDP, SSH, vnc to steer my VMs instead.

I get this too, and have to quit Gnome and relogin. Note: I don't have to quit X just relogin from the GDM login screen.

Doesn't GDM automatically restart the X-server on each login? (before gdm shows up)
btw: I started to use vmware (workstation 6.0.2) a few days ago and the previously described issue also happened to me. So far one once. I'm using dwm, so its not a gnome issue. What even more sucks is that I control everything with key bindings, so if I loose alt, ctrl and shift I can't even open a terminal or switch to a tty. Hm, I think I just remembered that alt did work when this happened on my system.

Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

I've had this problem when I was still using VMWare (switched to virtualbox now). My modifiers would stop working whenever I exited fullscreen mode.
A workaround is to have a keyboard switcher applet in your system tray. Just switch the layout and you should be fine. Beats restarting X.

Hello there !
I had the same problem on Gentoo and (K)Ubuntu. To get back your keyboard layout just use the "setxkbmap" command without any option. But be aware that your if you restore the host's keyboard layout, the guest's one could be altered.

just to report, i too have the same problem under fluxbox. restarting fluxbox doesn't do it - i have to quit x entirely.

Did you try the setxkbmap command ?

I ran setxkbmap after starting VMware and grabbing the mouse, and it didn't work. Neither Alt nor Super keys are working. Ctrl and Shift work.
I'm using VMWare 1.0.5 build-80187 and openbox.
