Is there a pacman GUI that supports AUR packages ?

Hi.

At the moment I use shaman as a pacman GUI, although it is really good and works well it doesn't support AUR packages.

I know that AUR packages are different as they are not binary files, but was wondering if there was any GUI that exists that you can use AUR with ?

If not I imagine a really good tool would be like Kuroo (on gentoo) - maybe with a way of checking compile options ?

Anyone know if something exists ?

I have seen this page but none say they work with AUR

Cheers

Just in case you're not really looking for a GUI but for a convenient way to search for and download and complile AUR packages let me recommend Yaourt to you. Just disregard this post if you're absolutely looking for a non-console-solution. wink

Yaourt is pretty and colorful, prettier than any gui IMO smile
Just type yaourt <program name or any search term> and it will give you a list of matches, which you can easily install by typing the corresponding number (just like if you were using a search feature in a GUI)

Re: Is there a pacman GUI that supports AUR packages ?

Hi.

Thanks for the responses...

I already do use Yaourt - it is really good - In fact if it wasn't for Yaourt I would have never stopped using Gentoo.

Yaourt is awesome as you get access to so much software from AUR  (unverified though..) and the ability to easily compile a package ... (no use flags though)

I was looking for a GUI method of accessing AUR, once we have that we will have access to more games/apps than even ubuntu/debian in a nice easy gui.
- although debian will have more packages it doesn't have as fun software as AUR - i.e enemy territory, alienarena, etc ,etc - also AUR tends have up to date versions of software (like Arch)

(I know that gui's are not the arch way - however I usually use  shaman to find packages i need)

Maybe it will be a shaman addon in future ?

Cheers

Doubt it, because they would have to take Shaman out the main repos.

DevoidOfWindows  -  nice name dude ....

Oh well maybe something will turn up in AUR one day ?

A good gui for updates/AUR package manager would mean that all the people (friends)  I have put Ubuntu on (these are generally non-technical people who have been in someway damaged by windows - i.e virus, unworkable system, etc, etc) could be replaced with Arch - which is a lot faster.

Most of the people have older hardware (1.2 Gig cpu / 256MB ram range) that would massively benefit from using a slimmer OS...

When my main system died recently I was forced to use a 433 celeron with 192MB ram - Ubuntu was just too slow (even xbuntu) but Arch with LXDE was actually semi usable (firefox was pretty slow...)

Thanks for the feedback everybody - this is the 1st post of a non technical nature and even this has had constructive feedback.

cheers!

As of a few months ago:

Until then you can use yaourt or just AUR manually smile

Sorry, but this sounds like a reason not to add AUR support to any gui tongue

Haha, Rasi is totally right. Arch isn't meant for newbies and we shouldn't try to make it easier for them.

Hi.

Point taken - although you surely we want as many people running arch  - The speed of the system is something everybody should be able to enjoy.

Otherwise are we not attaining a sort of Mac/MS mentality...

Package manager Gui's in the past have enabled me to find software that I had no idea existed ......

Re: Is there a pacman GUI that supports AUR packages ?

the speed also partly comes from being able to understand the workings of the system and its various application choises. Arch is low profile because we are able to have such a deep level of control over what we install.

That inherently comes with some less user-friendly steps compared to click-and-go distributions.

Besides, too much automation when it comes to compiling (as is often the case with the AUR) can't be a good thing. I manually overview most PKGBUILD files before I even attempt a build... god knows some of them may include a faulty rm command. *shiver*

I have come across some pretty bad build descrption files that, for exampe, try to write into system directories with sudo, or write into the home directories, and I inadvertantly installed something, once, that made a mess of the file system root.

Really?  I have no knowledge of a PKGBUILD that was ever that bad.  Anything like this should immediately be posted to the aur-general list so that the TUs can deal with it.  Not that I'm saying that you should blindly install from the AUR...

I remember some atrocious stuff - crap does get in sometimes, just as a result of the openness of the system and the sheer volume of submissions.

Re: Is there a pacman GUI that supports AUR packages ?

I guess that is the risk with AUR packages .... Arch without AUR though would be lacking so much software .... (i.e software to install via a package manager (yaourt) - obviously you can alway install whatever directly from source).

I guess that is why Debian/Gentoo/Ubuntu are impressive - the amount of supported software.

I still prefer Arch as you always get the latest 'stable' software - for example I cannot see why Ubuntu stick with certain packages in the 'name of stability'  - i.e Firefox is only 3 rather than 3.5 - Some other packages it makes even less sense - like the nvidia drivers - the latest Ubuntu 'stable' version in 180.44 - there have been several releases since that fix a lot of bugs.....

The  best thing that can occur is more packages being put into community/extra.

Thanks for all the input everybody . I'll leave the noobs with a buntu of some kind (maybe they will appreciate .Chrome OS when released...)

I find that namcap, which is available to use in yaourt before installing a package from AUR, finds a lot of that kind of bad stuff.
