Hi all,
I installed Arch a few weeks ago, and I'm very pleased with it. There is only one downpoint, Video performance appears to be better on Ubuntu!
I downloaded nvidia drivers for my FX5500 256mb from the nvidia site, and installed them correctly..
I ran the phoronix ut2004-demo test, Arch got 18.2 fps, Ubuntu 22.6. This is pretty much of a difference, how can this be?
When running the test, I have no windows managers running.
Careful what you wish, you might just get it!

It's hard to say. Could be the difference in the kernel, nvidia drivers or anything really.
BTW: You shouldn't install the drivers from the website, you should use pacman.

whoa thanks for the very quick reply, I was using the pacman drivers, but I thought the drivers from the nvidia site might have been faster, but no.

Newer the nvidia drivers, poorer the performance...

Hmm... I haven't had that experience. 173.xx were horrible for 2D performance with 8800GT, 177.xx were a bit better, 180.xx was pretty good. 185.xx has been pretty damn close to perfect. I use GNOME w/ no compositing though. In 3D, I haven't really noticed any change ... But I don't use heavy 3D that often.

Agreed with Themaister.
The newer nvidia drivers are WAY better for recent cards.
