Video performance better on Ubuntu?

Hi all,

I installed Arch a few weeks ago, and I'm very pleased with it. There is only one downpoint, Video performance appears to be better on Ubuntu!

I downloaded nvidia drivers for my FX5500 256mb from the nvidia site, and installed them correctly..

I ran the phoronix ut2004-demo test, Arch got 18.2 fps, Ubuntu 22.6. This is pretty much of a difference, how can this be?

When running the test, I have no windows managers running.

Re: Video performance better on Ubuntu?

It's hard to say. Could be the difference in the kernel, nvidia drivers or anything really.

BTW: You shouldn't install the drivers from the website, you should use pacman.

Re: Video performance better on Ubuntu?

whoa thanks for the very quick reply, I was using the pacman drivers, but I thought the drivers from the nvidia site might have been faster, but no.

Newer the nvidia drivers, poorer the performance...

Re: Video performance better on Ubuntu?

Hmm... I haven't had that experience. 173.xx were horrible for 2D performance with 8800GT, 177.xx were a bit better, 180.xx was pretty good. 185.xx has been pretty damn close to perfect. big_smile I use GNOME w/ no compositing though. In 3D, I haven't really noticed any change ... But I don't use heavy 3D that often.

Agreed with Themaister.
The newer nvidia drivers are WAY better for recent cards.

Re: Video performance better on Ubuntu?

I might buy a very recent GTX card soon. How the 2D/3D performance with the newest cards nowadays?
