SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

Hello,

I upgraded to kernel26 2.6.30 from testing today, and now my laptop screen is with the brightness stuck on the 100% setting (which is too much for me, in fact it gives me a headache). The Fn-Arrow keys (which control the brightness) are unresponsive.

EDIT: Solved by placing options video brightness_switch_enabled=1 on /etc/modprobe.d/video.conf (create it if it doesn't exist).

I use Intel i965 video chipset on a laptop Acer Aspire 7720.

Solutions?

Thanks.

Same problem here - but I've already tried your solution - haven't you changed anything else?
Edit: I belive you must have changed something else, because brightness_switch_enabled is on by default.

same here, added that line to my modprobe.d/video.conf and nothing changed.

Running a T400 with internal graphics (4500?) on the intel driver

Re: SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

I have the same problem too, the only way I can change the brightness is via

setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=FF

I generally don't set it lower than 55, that's already quite dim, but to warn you I have a Samsung NC10, and the address for my video controller is 00:02.1
You need to run something like

lspci | grep VGA

to find out where yours is.

Edited to change from lshal to lspci

Actually, I can change it via /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. But keys or xbacklight doesn't work.

lshal doesn't work for this on my system. lscpi does though:

lspci | grep VGA

Re: SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

Wont work, sorry - but this is maybe because there is no vendor-specific acpi driver for my laptop (Lenovo 3000 N200). I've even tried vanilla -git17 kernel. Anyone have better idea than trying which commit broke it?

Now 2.6.30 hit core, so the problem got to me. (Well, I can adjust the brightness on the keyboard, but it's always on max when I reboot.)

I found out from Google what acpi_backlight=vendor does, but I didn't manage to figure out what has changed in 2.6.30 that makes me need it...?

Edit: Hmm, setting it to vendor actually makes my brightness keys stop working, but with the brightness on the right level. Removing the parameter completely, the brightness is maxed at reboot, as I said, but at least my keys are working. I guess I'll just set the brightness in rc.local for now.

None of the solution works for me (setpci is no real solution, at least a workaroud...). Is it really solve for everyone ? (samsung nc10 here)

I've an NC10 too, I think the problems began when I installed a bios version hidden in their polish site that wasn't publicly available, and subsequently removed. It allowed me to increase the max amount of memory allocated to the graphics card from the bios.

Did you do the same, or is your problem just a symptom of the kernel and driver upgrades? I did switch on KMS around the same time, so it could be that either, but I like how my v/c looks with KMS, so I won't be turning it off tongue

It is indeed related with KMS ...

Re: SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

I had the same problem on my Macbook Santa Rosa (4,1). I solved the problem by turning off KMS -- as outlined for a different distro on this web page:

http://www.cenolan.com/2009/06/installi … a-macbook/

When I disable KMS, the brightness keys and auto brightness levels work just fine.

I would be curious to know whether there's a fully functional fix for this.

Re: SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

I followed this thread and looking others too.
Nothing can work for my Aspire 6935, unfotunately.
Fn+F5 brings brightness to maximum, but no solution to dim it a little.
This is my vga card:

 lspci |grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9600M GT (rev a1

Strangely the BIOS can control the brightness as expected, but Arch might not look into that.

I posted a bash script workaround here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74914

It uses the setpci command, and dc (part of bc package) to do hex conversion.

But to warn you I've only tried it on my intel 945GM, I don't know if it will work with an nvidia card.

Re: SOLVED: kernel26 2.6.30 -> laptop LCD brightness stuck on max

Thank you for your efforts. I already tried setpci, but didn't give any result.
I've tried also nvclock's smartdimmer, but it gives segfault. Even nvidia-bl didn't fit for the case, even it said to be compatible with G 9600M card.
All other solution from this and other threads weren't successful.

I would like to mention that adding the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor re-enables the brightness keys on a Sony Vaio SZ61XN/C.

Hi,
On my Sony VAIO hotkeys (including brightness) are not working. Where to add this kernel parameter??

In /boot/grub/menu.lst. On the 'kernel' line.
