weird resolution problem

Hi all,

I've set my default resolution to 1600x1200_75 in my xorg.conf, and that works fine. (my monitor is is definitely running at 75Hz  in X).

However, if I go to "display" in xfce's settings menu, it claims I am running 1600x1200 @ 50Hz (I'm not), I don't even have an option in the dropdown for 75Hz

the output from xranr is as follows:

carl@interstat ~ $ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 1600 x 1200
default connected 1600x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1600x1200 50.0* 52.0 53.0 54.0
   1280x1024 51.0 57.0 58.0
   1400x1050 55.0 56.0
   1280x960 59.0 60.0
   1152x864 61.0
   1024x768 62.0 63.0 64.0 65.0 66.0
   832x624 67.0
   800x600 68.0 69.0 70.0 71.0 72.0 73.0
   720x400 74.0
   700x525 75.0 76.0
   640x480 77.0 78.0 79.0 80.0
   640x400 81.0
   640x350 82.0
   512x384 83.0 84.0 85.0
   400x300 86.0
   320x240 87.0 88.0
   320x175 89.0

It also claims I am running at 50Hz

If I mess around with the display settings, I can set 54 Hz (which looks terrible), but I can't get back to 75Hz without restarting X

anyone know why the higher refresh modes don't seem to be recognised in X?
