Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

Hey all,

first of all, sorry if this is the wrong subforum to post this in but this one seemed most appropriate.

I would like to announce the release of live.linuX-gamers 0.9.5, an Arch Linux based live gaming distro. It was made using Archiso and of course a big investment of time. It is going to be officially released on LinuxTag 2009 in Berlin (in three days) but I thought I'd give it to you guys now.

It is a very specialized distro: It contains lots of popular games, installs proprietary graphics card drivers out-of-the-box and provides you with a nice, clean interface for launching games and a few basic applications.

I don't want to over-advertise this so I'll just say: Please go ahead and test it if you feel like it, maybe mirror it or seed the torrents a bit, post feedback or thoughts, insult me or threaten me, etc.

If you want to give it a spin or see which games are on it, go over to http://live.linux-gamers.net and grab yourself an ISO/USB image.

Thank you, Arch Linux, for making this possible.

Re: Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

I haven't tested it yet but it looks good from the information on the site. This should be really useful for impromptu LAN parties and other situations in which you just want to get down to playing without bothering with installation and setup.

Is there an easy way to burn the live disk with your own config files or do you just recommend keeping all user data on a separate flash key?

Well done!

Re: Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

To be honest, in this version, I only wanted the basics to *just work* as I had just taken over the project from the original makers and I had to basically start from scratch. In version 0.9.6 there will be tools that allow for loading of configuration files from a flash key/installing to disk/mastering your own ISO/USB entirely with a big games selection (even bigger than the current one!).

Know also that we can't provide all the games that we would want to because 1) license constraints (Enemy Territory, Quake 4 Demo, Prey Demo, etc) 2) size constraints.

Therefore, the mastering tool for version 0.9.6 will come in handy.

Woah, I nicely evaded your question there: Of course HAL will auto-detect any inserted flash key and thus you can just use plain ol' xterm to manually copy over your settings. But as I said, I didn't really account for all that keeping-your-settings-permanent stuff just yet.

I like the idea. If I have time to try out it out I'll give you some feedback (if work is quiet this week I'll give it a shot).

I've had an idea like this for some time, but I don't have the skills to complete something like this. Nice work smile A really cool thing in the future would be having a standardized PC/console, which runs LiveCD-commercial games tongue Would be fun. The standard Linux system would be completely stripped down and fine tuned, as the hardware is standardized. tongue

There is already some open-source Linux-based console.  I don't remember the name, and afaik it was not as powerfull as, say a PS3. but it's a  start I guess.

I don't suppose there is any sort of repository set up for the project.  I'd love to dink around with it and possibly contribute in my spare time.

I had thought of doing something similar with archiso.

Re: Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

To be honest, this release (0.9.5) wasn't really meant to be tinkered with as it was a release for LinuxTag2009 and thus I had to make sure that it runs on most machines, not that most people can modify it. The source files are quite big because they consist of many game packages.

I will upload all sources, games and packages along with the next version 0.9.6 and make sure that most people will be able to put their games in there without much work at all.

This thread is rather old, but yeah, it's possible to remaster this "meta-distro" and add/remove games you like: http://github.com/svenstaro/lglive
BTW, there's a new release http://live.linux-gamers.net/

Ohh what a positive surprise to have a girl here,

yea, i downloaded the DVD this week. I'm no gamer, I gamed in the 90ies on a Amiga 500 last time. But sometimes I get a wich to play a bit, so I found this DVD (I don't want to instal games to my production-distro and don't want to instal Catalyst either for my card)
I want to play 3d first-person games but those ego-shooters i don't enjoy. Its running around shooting on everything and diying a hundred times. I want something more realistic, so I found penumbra and amnesia and would like to install it with this DVD. (if anyone has tips for realistic 3d-games, action-adventures, etc. I would apreciate tips)
I will have a look at your link, thanks a lot

Putting new games on this is rather easy. There will probably be Amnesia demo on it the next time too! Glad you like it.

Re: Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

don't wanna open new topic....I once saw a linux-game in youtube wich I can't find anyumore. It was kind of an 3d-action-adventure (not sure, not into game-genres) where you play a guy in the orient. It's 3d person, the guy has to prove his inocence and/or lost his memory or something like this. You can move on roof-tops and so on. Anybody knows this game?

I'm playing full-version since yesterday. It's awesome, I'm almost through allready (it addicts). I never startel in a movie but this game makes you feel you are in the virtual-world.

Pleas *do* start a new topic. As I've already said, this one's old and the first half is about sth completely different from what we're discussing now.
