I have a few problems with gnome:
1) gpdf hangs when I try to open pdf files
2) epiphany crashes from time to time
Do you have similar problems? Do you have any idea why does it happen?
Offline
gpdf is broken by design it seems, I haven't been able to view ANY PDF with ANY version of gpdf somehow . I prefer acroread or xpdf or ggv (although the ggv guys say you should use gpdf instead for PDF ).
Most of the tmes, gpdf runs for a while and then the viewer program crashes, leaving you with 100% CPU and a runaway interface with no PDF in it.
About epiphany: You happen to have installed the new freetype from testing? Mozilla 1.7.3 is very picky at that one and will crash. We're working on 1.7.5 and we hope to have that one working with the freetype from testing.

I think gpdf worked for me some time ago. But for a few days I wasn't able to view any pdf with it. That's true it eats 100% cpu (xkill doesn't work!). I wonder if this is an Arch specific issue - is it possible for official gnome component to be totally broken?
Here is the output of "pacman -Qi freetype2":
Name : freetype2
Version : 2.1.7-2
Groups : None
Packager : Arch Linux (http://www.archlinux.org)
URL : http://freetype.sourceforge.net

Seems this is not freetype2 from testing. Anyone?

I've noticed the same. Gpdf used to work until recently.
Also, I'm having problem with rhythmbox hanging when trying to play any song.

Seems nautilus-cd-burner does the same! HELP! PLEASE! My GNOME seems to work less and less reliably:
1) gpdf hangs
2) nautilus-cd-burner hangs
3) nautilus crashes from time to time
4) epiphany crashes
5) a few days ago evolution stopped working for about two days; I had to delete its configuration files
Is this unstability inherent to GNOME or is this Arch's package problem?

in order to diagnose the problem, we're gonna need more info... run something (epiphany) from a terminal and make it crash... see if there's any output...
if you can, post the ldd output for epiphany... just so someone can veirfy everything on their machine....
hmmm, what else....could it be the network? are all the settings default?

Thank you phrakture for willingness to help me even though we have radically different views on C++ exceptions.
Evolution seems to work right now, I don't know why it used to misbehave (as far as I remember, none of my mail folders was visible).
Epiphany crashes rarely, so It's hard to be running it in terminal when it does. Same problem with nautilus.
gpdf hangs on opening file and outputs nothing.

I will try to tell you more about nautilus-cd-burner, but I have to run it from a terminal.
hmmm, what else....could it be the network? are all the settings default?
I don't have a fancy network setup. I use sk98lin module for my onboard ethernet controller.
Here's my /etc/hosts:
#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#
#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.0.1 myhost
And the relevant part of /etc/rc.conf:
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
#
# Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each route then list in ROUTES
# (prefix a route in ROUTES with a ! to disable it)
#
gateway="default gw <some ip>"
ROUTES=(!gateway)
#
# Daemons to start at boot-up (in this order)

Nautilus doesn't give any output in terminal.
Here is a screenshot:
When I try to close this window with "X", I get ( :shock: ):

I had a similar problem. To solve it I uninstalled all Gnome pacgages, deleted all configs and installed all dependencies and it runs stable now.

I wonder how does it happen. I don't run GNOME as root, so it can't modify any system files. But when I create a fresh new account, the problems are still there. So why GNOME's behaviour is variable? Once stable, now unstable. Really puzzling...

I cannot tell you about epiphany since I don't have it install since I do not like it at all.
Nautilus has been rock solid with me, but...
gnome-terminal is another story. Practically everytime I open it and try to make a package, it ends in a complete freeze and even sometimes taking the computer with it. Because that I made all my console stuff on KDE.
Offline
the weird thing that the problem is not all the time. Sometimes it work well, sometimes slows my computer to a crawl, sometimes hang up the shell, and sometimes freeze X competely.
And what I do on the shell. The usual pacman stuff and making packages. Usually nothing else.

I like epiphany because it has a very nice user interface.
Surprisingly, after going to GTK 2.6.x epiphany became one of the most stable GTK apps ;(
I don't use GNOME Terminal (I didn't even install it). It's so damn sloooow. I prefer rxvt (which can be adjusted to your needs too, by using .Xdefaults).
By the way, everything in GTK world seems to be unstable recently. Is this GTK that sucks? Or maybe Arch sucks?

Some people on ck maillist reported some problems with gnome-terminal:
http://bhhdoa.org.au/pipermail/ck/2004- … 01657.html
There was a bug in the 2.6.9-ck3 scheduler which got fixed, AFAIK.
I don't know if you're using a patched kernel though...

I'm having the exactly the same problem as vicious with nautilus-cd-burner. Rhythmbox closes the moment I try to play ogg files (it's fine with mp3). And I can't get through evolution setup: it hangs at time-zone selection.
The evolution problem is discussed in this thread:
Offline
evolution: gtk theme can crash this or prevent it starting. same for other apps
gnome-cd-burner: is still very very new, and primitive, leave it and use something else for the timebeing. it will be muchly improved in the next release
gpdf: crashes for me too, not sure why, i just use xpdf or acroread
nautilus: shouldnt be crashing.
i was also having erratic gnome problems once which was fixed with a full removal of gnome and everything gtk, and a reinstall of them again. try that.

I tried removing gnome and reinstalling it.
But it seems pacman has a bug - it didn't want to remove one of the packages (I don't remember which; one of base gnome packages; pacman just exited without doing anything).
So I decided to remove the files by hand. I used pacman to create a list of files, and removed the files in the list. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the directories where on the list :oops:
So, I ended up without my /etc. :cry:
Now I'm a happy CRUX user again.

My mistake, yes. But no matter how much more clever you are than me, the command "rm -r" is inherently dangerous when used by root. So this is the fault of pacman which forced me to use such a command.
By the way, CRUX seems much nicer than Arch
