no sound with pulseaudio after install

I just installed arch, and followed the guide (except for the part about esd drop in and system-wide pulseaudio) and i get no sound. With the pulse audio volume control its moving like there is sound playing, but i still hear nothing, and ive tried all the available devices, made sure they were not muted in alsa mixer....i'm at a loss on whats going on, pulse has worked before on ubuntu and other distros fine...

Re: no sound with pulseaudio after install

and as an update, here is my sound card:

00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:3a3e]

i have also tried blacklisting snd_pcsp, and that doesn't work.

EDIT: solved it. Turns out you have to run the command

alsamixer -c 0

to get alsamixer to actually change the sound devices of the card instead of pulseaudio master channel. There, i just unmuted everything and it magically works

BUT

now the sound is stuttering pretty horribly and when i listen to music with VLC, its pretty much unbearable. I think its even speeding up the music as well......any ideas on how to fix this?

my messages.log file is filled with this:
