How do I install Java for phoenix? I have the j2sdk installed, but can't figure out which plugin to link to. Simply going to a page with a java applet on it causes a pop up to ask if I want to install Java - but this doesn't seem to work properly
Also, has anyone figured out a way to get around that annoying profiles thing? If I have a browser open and click a link in say, evolution, then I want a new tab to open - not another browser causing profile problems

Try this:
$ cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
$ ln -s /opt/j2sdk/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so
and restart mozilla/firebird/phoenix. Worked for me.

I have had problems myself with getting the java plugin to work for Mozilla, I would install the J2SDK and then copy over the stuff from the plugin directory from that, and then when a java enabled web page occured, Mozilla would disappear. I believe it had something to do with what version of gcc it was compiled with.

got Java working - using clues from both posts. I downloaded Java 1.4.2 and installed it that way rather than from pacman - but I found a plugin that was called something like n2610-gcc32
and I used that one - and it worked!
Just got to figure out the profile thing now...

That's with the old Sun version of java, the current blackdown version works perfectly, which is in abs
just symlink the java plugin in /opt/j2sdk/jre/plugin to your plugin directory

As for the annoying profiles thing check http://kingant.net/?p=mss. I have not tried it myself. (Originally suggested by Arieltext in this thread).

Doesn't want to play nicely with phoenix at all - had to uninstall and then reinstall phoenxi to get things back to normal

ARIELEXT !!!!!
In arielext defense - "straight" mozilla isn't exactly the same as phoenix - I think that half the problem was that I was working with phoenix

I'm using firebird-0.6 (from incoming) and our j2sdk package works fine with it.

Oops, sorry for that. Unfortunatly I'm likely to do it again, once I misread something my head prefers to keep it that way..

Is that 0.6 with XFT package?
I'm using the same (build it myself, just love Firebird with Vera fonts) but I saw that if you also have Mozilla installed it will check *that* directory for the plugins, so be sure to place the plugins in all plugins directories that you find (okay that's overkill but it works)
apt-get install arch

all that is necessary is a couple of changes to the script, and it will work quite nicely. If you are using firebird, I'll put my version up so you can download it: http://photism.org/download/
