searching introduction: /dev, finding devices & misc useful stuff

Hi!

I'm searching an introduction on how to "work with stuff in /dev" and maybe other "system folders"... is there some practical perspective documentation / manual / tutorial on that out there? Something that helps me figure out stuff like...
- what do all the folders / "files" mean?
- what's the device name of my soundcard and/or why can't I pipe to it?
- where is my usb drive and how do I take a look at the partition table or MBR or whatever?
- what programs are useful to get info from what device
.. without getting too much into the theory (just basics) for now?

That might be an assortment of pretty random information, but to begin with I'm searching the smallest text that gets be the farthest.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

For /dev, you can do a google search for the /dev directory(eg: http://tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/dev-fs.html)  You also mentioned other system folders, and for that you may find this useful:
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/
For partitioning, you may look into http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/ and  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Storage_Devices

That's not really what I'm hoping to find, but thanks: I had worse pages to look things up bookmarked, guess I can replace some now!

I think it's hard to describe what I'm searching for and something much closer to it might not exist, but I'm gonna try anyway:

Imagine something like the link: http://tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/dev-fs.html
- less systematic, less technical descriptions
- some examples of how things can work/interact

Don't know - I might have strange learning habits. Well, I'm going to browse tldp.org a bit and keep searching for something that suits me more... If someone knows where to find "documentations" with a more practical/fun/chaotic/random/confusing approach: that might fit, post the links please, thanks! wink
