Is there something like LADSPA for X/video?

I recently figured out how to equalize/compress the audio on my system using LADSPA plugins with ALSA. They're pretty cool and extremely useful for me. What I'm wondering now is if there's something similar for X. I want to be able to adjust the actual values of the pixels drawn to implement things like brightness and contrast control as well as more complex things (like scaling to use the full range of brightness). I know about '/proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness' but I think you would need something that is done strictly in software.  I tried searching for software like this but had trouble finding anything. Thanks for any comments!

poobare,

Could you please post a guide or URL on how to set up a system-wide audio equalizer?
