Suspend stopped working for me
I'm not sure what is important so excuse me if I talk too much:
1. I have a Dell Studio 1737 Laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (so x64).
2. I installed the kernel and catalyst from kensai's repo, the first version (a couple of days ago, page 14 in this thread). Both suspend and acceleration worked fine. The only quirks was the funny (?) pm-suspend.log (page 16 and same below), and that when I shut down the computer, I didn't get the "Shutting Down … [DONE]" messages, just whatever had been in tty1 before.
3. After some time and (I believe) one update–including mesa 7.4.4-1 and xorg-server 1.6.1.901-3–it all broke down. My computer froze on .xinitrc (below) between feh and dzen. I could only hard reboot it,
# input method (UIM required by ~/.XCompose)
export GTK_IM_MODULE=uim
export QT_IM_MODULE=uim
export XMODIFIERS="@im=uim"
# background
feh --bg-scale /home/kamil/.xmonad/background.png
# dzen
~/.dzen/dzen.sh &
# disable touchpad when typing
syndaemon -i 1 -t &
# xmonad
exec xmonad
4, I tried downgrading mesa and xorg-server. I'm not sure what versions I had had before (stupid me, couldn't have waited with cleaning the cache!). I found 7.4.2-1 and 1.6.1.901-1 respectively. But it didn't change anything.
5. In the meantime kensai fixed the AUR package so that it didn't require the patched kernel anymore. I installed the core kernel and catalyst from AUR. But again, it didn't help, same as in 4.
6. Then kensai uploaded a new version of catalyst to his repo. I pulled this. Acceleration works fine but I can't resume. It goes to sleep ok but then, it always has. Resuming however, looks like on xf86-video-radeonhd: the screen is completely black, I can type reboot and it reboots. I also tried typing "vbetool dpms on" but nothing seems to happen. I tried "hpet=disable" but it doesn't seem to change anything. Below is my pm-suspend.log:

OK, I am getting very tired with catalyst. AMD are the worst company when it comes to supporting Linux, they just can't do things right. They release documentation, but their open drivers are very bad still.
This drivers are working fine for x86_64, so I guess there is a problem with i686.

You can always think of it as more encouragement to get away from 32-bit and come to the land of 64...and to avoid AMD/ATi.
Offline
I just installed the stock kernel 2.6.30 x86_64 and your catalyst and catalyst-utils from the repo and all is well.
Ya I just got over my being pissed with AMD. But hay, look at it this way, nVidia makes a driver for FreeBSD, Solaris, All/Linux and even Wincrap. However, it is closed and they are not talking about opening it. So, soon enough the Open ATI drivers will be good and they will run on all *nix systems including OpenBSD. Although, as of now, nVidia suport all/LInux, FreeBSD and Solais while ATI supports basically nothing.
I don't know why anyone would use x686, you can only use one of your cores at a time? I have never used it. Wine, ya, that's 32bit but I have it installed and running... Most everything is 64bit now even flash & java. So, you really do get the benefit of using both your CPU cores at the same time. You also get to have a bunch of RAM for VM's.

That's exactly the point I'm not sure about anymore... It's not only that I'm pissed. I bought an expensive card with idialistic and optimistic thoughts on ati's promise to open the drivers, wanting to
support such noble efforts. But this a good year ago already and still there's no sign that ati really intends to open their drivers or support linux in general and not just ubuntu...
Even more, I told a former lecturer of mine about my dilemma with the ati drivers and he said, ati was already talking about opening their drivers in 2002 (!) already when he was applying at one of
their development places in Germany. Mind you, that place has been closed in the meantime...
Well, I'm through with ati. I'm not a beta tester. I bought this card at full price and expect full performance of it without fiddling around with drivers all the time or even accepting crashes. Tonight, I'll
order an nVidia card, my patience is worn out.
I again would like to acknowledge the immense efforts the community here invests to get these drivers running on a current kernel. You should be paid for this by ati!

As long as nVidia delivers excellent support for their nVidia cards, it's better to have a working, and well maintained (Haven't had compability issues yet, and I use rc-kernels and bleeding edge X.org) closed driver than a non-functional open driver. "Open ATI drivers will be good". Sure. When? I'm not holding my breath. I was also thinking of getting an ATi card, but there's not even a choise anymore.

Boy It is nice to here people that agree with me on this
Everywhere ells I talked like that I got flamed pretty good.
The guys on Phoronix really got heated. Everyone ells has told me that the drivers are coming along swimmingly. ATI just realsed full 2D & 3D specs on toughs 2year old cards that they dropped support for..... I guess that is good? It would be really nice to give OpenBSD a real go.

Hey guys,
I just installed the catalyst from the AUR (Version 9.6) on my laptop (luckily it's x86_64 - with 4GB RAM maybe it's this). As far as I can tell everything works but I'm seeing these nasty errors by calling dmesg:

Anyone knows what this is and how I'm getting rid of this? I'm expecting that error messages are pretty normal for this piece of "software", though...

mazur also could you detail how to install radeonhd-git if you get encouraging results..;)

You don't need Mesa- or Radeon-GIT; all you need is Kernel 2.6.30 or later, xf86-video-radeon -- not radeonhd, and to make sure that the radeon module is loading at boot.
