hi i just installed the XDM login manager and whenever i try to login it brings me back to the login prompt. I was hoping that there was someway to break out of this loop and maybe login through the command line again? thanks
EDIT: i just kept on trying to switch to a different terminal and eventually got to one...

Hit CTRL+ALT+F1-6 to switch to a different terminal. Also, I suggest editing your menu.lst file so that you have an option to boot Arch in run level 5 (X11) and run level 3 (multi-user). Btw, you can switch run levels with the command:
/sbin/telinit x
x being the run level.

you can also switch run levels with 'init x' where x is the number.
As for Xdm, ensure your .xinitrc/.Xclientrc (can't remember which XDM uses) is chmodded +x (executable), and that it will, continue running, eg:
Good:
exec openbox
Bad:
openbox &

so with the '/sbin/telinit x' command...where could i enter that command in? the login screen asks me for the user name and password and then just loops back to itself...

Hit CTRL+ALT+F6 to switch to another terminal. Then just login as root and use the command.

I had the same issue and the fact that I made .xinitrc executable solved it for me. Thanks guys.
