Sane Puzzle

Today I "pacman -Suy" and upgraded to sane 1.0.15-1 and my scanner no longer worked (switched on after logging in).

When I "su root" and "/etc/rc.d/hotplug stop" then "start", hotplug told me it had problems with device ".../001/005". I'm not surprised, my scanner was on ".../002/005". Anyway I plugged my scanner into the first pair of USB ports (near the mouse/keyboard rather than a usb PCI card) and it works.

Now "udev" was updated 14 Dec and hotplug 22 Nov and I used my scanner a week or so ago with no problems. Not quite sure if that was before of after the udev update.

Re: Sane Puzzle

It was after the sane update, I had mine working perfectly fine after I ran ' pacman -Syu ' last night, then this morning I saw that sane was updated so I went to scan something and xsane said that no devices where found.  Which is the problem I used to get when the scanner was not working... I'm tracing back the steps I did to install the install the scanner and hopefully have it working soon...

vacant-

Ok I traced back some steps and there is post in this forum right here called ' HP PSC 1210 all-in-1 setup problems '  since I have an hp printer I followed the second post by iBertus.  I also checked my /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and found that it was set back to defaults...  also you should use the 'ptal-init setup ' to get your scanner working....  Just follow that post and it should be fixed... like Mr. Green said check your configs, because that seems to be the problem tongue dunno why updating sane would reset the configs to default.  Hope it works, also what scanner/all-in-one printer do you have?

I've got an Epson 1260/photo and kooka always shows it as a plustek. So the hp solution is not for me.

The configs look fine. dll.conf is just a list, plustek.dll has [usb] and I do not specify "libusb:00x:00y" anywhere. So,,,, I have a working scanner when I switch it on if on usb bus 001

E.g.

[root@night paul]# /etc/rc.d/hotplug stop
:: Stopping Hotplug Daemon                                                                        [DONE]
[root@night paul]# /etc/rc.d/hotplug start
:: Starting Hotplug Daemon                                                                        [DONE]
[root@night paul]# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

E:  Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS=  64 Ivl=0ms

[root@night paul]# /etc/rc.d/hotplug stop

at this point I unplug the scanner (device 002) from the usb port "bus 001" near the mouse and plug it in to the PCI card USB port:

[root@night paul]# /etc/rc.d/hotplug start
:: Starting Hotplug Daemon [BUSY]chown: cannot access `/proc/bus/usb/001/003': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/proc/bus/usb/001/003': No such file or directory
                                                                                                  [DONE]
[root@night paul]# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

T:  Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#=  3 Spd=12  MxCh= 0
D:  Ver= 1.10 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=00 Prot=ff MxPS= 8 #Cfgs=  1

E:  Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS=  64 Ivl=0ms
E:  Ad=03(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS=  64 Ivl=0ms
[root@night paul]# sane-find-scanner

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
  # Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
  # If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011d [EPSON Scanner], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:002:003

And above shows hotplug not finding my scanner on 001:003 (because it's on 002:003). Plugging it back into USB 001 (and getting 001:003, 001:004 etc) and hotplug is happy and can alter the protection so a user can run kooka.

So I solved it by having the scanner USB bus 001. It looks like a hotplug/udev problem.

Re: Sane Puzzle

Its just that every time pacman updates sane it wipes over gt68xx.conf .... so I back it up before upgrading ....

just one of those things you get used to it  tongue

Re: Sane Puzzle

xsane will also have issues when upgraded and there is a message upon install/upgrade on what SHOULD work. So read any install notes before you think it is a packaging error.

I am not saying that that is the case here but when any major issues may occur upon install or upgrade of any packages there are usually install notes.

for example when you instal/upgrade sane/xsane you should get this message:

If you use a usb scanner and hotplug than add your user to group 'scanner'
or change the /etc/hotplug/usb/libusbscanner to your needs.  If your scanner
is not listed in /etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap add a line for it.

If your usb scanner was turned on before booting, you have to unplug and
replug to access it as non root user.  Or, you may add a line to your
/etc/rc.local file granting permissions when your system boots.  Use the
'sane-find-scanner' command to obtain the correct path in the usb
filesystem.  For example,

  # sane-find-scanner | grep libusb
  libusb:001:003
  # echo "chmod a+rw /proc/bus/usb/001/003" >> /etc/rc.local

If you experience any problems after upgrading xsane it may help to remove the setup and preferences files of xsane:

  $ rm -rf ~/.sane/xsane"
