bluez no local devices

I followed the arch linux wiki article for bluetooth and there are no devices:

hcitool dev
Devices:

There are no devices in dmesg or /var/log/messages.log.  I have a macbook 2,1 which uses a usb bluetooth.  /var/log/messages.log:
