i'm using XFCE as a DE; when i close the laptop lid and open it back up the screen remains unpowered. At this point the only thing i can do is hold the power button until it turns off. Under the power manager i have it set to do nothing when the lid is closed...

There is a hardware switch in most (?) laptops that turns off the screen when the lid is closed. I'm not sure why it's not coming back on when you open it again. Perhaps you should fiddle with the settings in the power manager (see if setting it to e.g. suspend when the lid is closed lets it come back normally).

open a terminal, and type without running it:
xset dpms force on
Close the lid, open the lid and if the screen is still blank hit ENTER - is it now on?

trying to suspend when the laptop closed didn't change anything. but using 'xset dpms force on' worked perfectly. is there any way to do this automatically?

mh, sounds like an acpi-Problem. There is no event triggered, when the display is opened.

tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1) to tty6 (CTRL+ALT+F6) are shell terminals and tty7 (CTRL+ALT+F7) upwards are for X
