{SOLVED}Xorg problem

Hi, I am installing Arch for the first time using the Beginners Guide located in the Wiki.  Ive got to the part of installing and configuring X.  The first time I tried to test to see if it worked I got a blank black screen, so I followed the instructions in the Wiki how to get out into the commandline again.  I also did the tweaks it suggested in the wiki if you encountered an error such as I did.  After putting these new tweaks in the xorg.conf file, when I try to test out X again to see if it's working I get the messege "Fatal server error: no screens found" I am running a dell m1210 laptop with intel 945 graphics.

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

I have a intel 945 and it works perfectly.  Make sure you have the correct driver installed and double check your config.  Also, starting the hal deamon may be a good idea if you have not done so.

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

I think installing xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse should solve the problem.

I am a complete noob to this building your own system thing so I'll list what I have done to see if its correct.  I installed the "xf86-video-intel" for my graphic chipset.  Also starting hal, do i include it in the daemons section in my rc.conf?  My current daemon on rc.conf reads "DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa hal) So I think I have hal starting up?  Can you confirm this?

Yes, sounds like you're on the right track.  Follow paperiniks suggestion.

I followed what paperiniks suggested and no luck, I am still getting "Fatal server error:no screens found" when I type "X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf" to test out my X. Also when I type in "startx" it gives me the same fatal server error message.  But then at the bottom it reads "xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server" and "xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error."

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

Did you also install xf86-input-evdev? Also make sure you copy the /etc/skel/.xinitrc.  I didn't have any issues following the Beginners Guide.

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

Yes I installed that and still no luck.  Should I be modifying the etc/X11/xorg.conf file or the /root/xorg.conf.new file? Because I put the changes listed in the wiki in the etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

Ok I played around with my xorg.conf file and figured out what was giving me the error.  Now when i type in "X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf" I just get a blank screen.  What am I supposed to be seeing if X has been set up  correctly?
When I type in "startx"  I get three white text boxes titled "login" "xterm" and third looks like a analog clock.  Does this mean I have a properly configured working X now?

You could install a window manager (like openbox, icewm, lxde, etc), or desktop environment (kde, gnome or xfce4). Afterwards, edit the .xinitrc file by adding:

exec openbox (icewm, startlxde, startxfce4, etc)

A display manager (slim, gdm, etc) makes it easy for you to login (instead of startx).

Re: {SOLVED}Xorg problem

I got gnome all installed but when I enter it my trackpad doesnt move the cursor around and my keyboard doesnt work.  What do I have to install for them to work?

Disregard my upper message. I rebooted and keyboard and trackpad now work.
