Is it possible to check which packages from AUR on my system are outdated? The only way I can see this is using
yaourt -Syu --aur
but I don't want to do a system upgrade for just a list.

You can use a small tool I've just written; it's called aurcheck and you can find it on AUR here -> http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=28009

There are quite a few aur helpers that will do this, search for them (ironically) in the aur.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

I like pbget, in AUR or Xyne's repo, for this purpose. It'll get you the build material for any outdated packages.
pbget --aur-only --upgradable

Glad it helped
Btw, I've just release version 0.3 that should mimic the behaviour of yaourt even better.
