Strange new problem with uswsusp & swap

up until recently, suspend to Disk on my HP G60 using uswsusp via pm-utils worked excellently (s2ram never wakes up properly, but i suppose that's a very different problem...)
However, after foolishly messing around with the tuxonice kernel, running pm-hibernate gives me a blank screen, and then returns to X, and running s2disk returns:

s2disk: Could not use the resume device (try swapon -a). Reason: No such device

Very strange. I'm not sure if my swap is being recognised properly or something like that, but i'm not sure how to find out. also, i have set up the "resume device" bit in my /etc/suspend.conf. (my swap is supposedly /dev/sda3)
