what are you using to play embedded media in firefox? If you are using totem-plugin (which I recommend) then you need to install gst-plugins-bad and gst-plugins-ugly to ensure compatiblity with most proprietary codecs.

ok so this is really weird.
i can see the videos fine from apple.ca, but not from apple.com
and i don't have any win codecs installed either (i did but removed them because they were the 32 version).

You don't need any extra codecs. There's something going on with gecko-mediaplayer/gnome-mplayer that chokes on these videos. Mplayer itself can do it fine:
mplayer http://movies.apple.com/media/us/mac/getamac/2009/apple-mvp-customer_care-us-20090512_480x272.mov
Try the same code with gnome-mplayer:
gnome-mplayer http://movies.apple.com/media/us/mac/getamac/2009/apple-mvp-customer_care-us-20090512_480x272.mov
It doesn't work. I'd file a bug report with the gnome-mplayer bugtracker if you care.

i'd be happy to file a bug report, but i don't know how or where. can you tell me?
also, can i embed just mplayer instead of gecko-mplayer in my browser?

I have the same problem with gnome-mplayer and gecko-mplayer. When I try play trailers on apple.com gecko-mplayer starts but all I get is a bunch off flickering and then pop-up goes grey. Gnome-mplayer has also problems playing some off my files. I can get sound but no video but when I run the same file in smplayer no problem at all? Any ideas?

Apple screwed it up. You can't even wget most of their files now.

You can still view the promos but the trailers do a user-agent check for Quicktime now. I've built a script where you can still download them or view them in mplayer if you want:
