Realtek RTL8169 - not working at all [SOLVED]

I have just installed Arch on a fairly old (4 years old) computer. I'm quite familiar with using Arch but this time I face a problem I have never faced before. When I rebooted the computer after install the network was timed out.
I had set eth0 to dhcp. I thought there was something wrong with my router so I changed eth0 to a static ip. I got the ip obviously but couldn't ping anything, it just said unknown host. So I tried connecting the nic straight to my fiber socket. Same problem. I even bought a new nic, which is this realtek rtl8169. I got exactly the same problem with that card.

When I write "lspci | grep net" I get two network cards even though it's only one in my computer. The first one is nVidia nForce2 Ethernet controller and the second one is the Realtek card. I don't know if this would be a problem but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Maybe I need to add a module or something to make it work, I have no idea sad

So I was hoping you could help me.

Thanks in advance

Re: Realtek RTL8169 - not working at all [SOLVED]

you may need to install a driver for the card - particularly since it's a fresh install. try 'modprobe rtl8169' (i'm not sure if that's exactly the module name but if it's there it should work).

failing that, head to the realtek website (http://www.realtek.com.tw) and find the linux driver for your card.

hope that helps smile

=edit=

also: the second card showing up may be an onboard NIC. have you tried using that?

and out of interest, what was the old card?

The module is called r8169, so 'modprobe 8169' should enable it.

Note that a static IP not working doesn't preclude router problems. Does it work for anyone else on it, etc?

Even though I do not have the same ethernet controller,

I am facing a similar problem (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75675)
check on ifconfig the overruns on RX field.

Using dhcpcd do you get dhcpcd timeout?

Thanks for the fast reply.

lol, I didn't even think of trying that one. Omg, maybe why it's not working is because eth0 is the onboard card and I'm using the other card which is eth1.

The old card was a realtek rtl8139, I think it's like the predecessor of the 8169 or something.

Anyway, I'm going to try using the onboard card and test modprobe. The router is functional on 2 other computers, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'll be back with info on what happened.

Re: Realtek RTL8169 - not working at all [SOLVED]

Alright, I solved it.

I had been putting the cable in my second network card, which I thought was eth0. The onboard nic was the eth0, no wonder I couldn't get it working when the cable was in eth1 and eth1 wasn't even in interfaces wink Haha

So anyway, I put in both eth0 and eth1 in case I want to use the computer as a router with the two nics.

Thank you all for the fast replies! smile
