Choosing a WM?

Hello,

I'm new to Archlinux.  I've been Using Crunchbang linux for the past 2 months. I've built LFS to a Console, no X. I've installed Gentoo to a Console also, no X. The thought of compiling all those packages seems a bit much. I've gotten about 5 to 8% increase over a standard 686 build so I didn't figure it was worth all the additional work. I've already in the first few hours of using Archlinux got my X working. Now,  I need to choose a windowing environment.  I don't really care for KDE or Gnome as they hide the console too much. Crunchbang uses Openbox. LFS's Live CD is XFCE , when I run the cd and "toram" the cd contents it's lightning fast. I'm open for suggestions?
Curious to know , is XFCE that fast because it's already in ram? is there a way to do something similar with the programs I use most of the time?
Kinda makes me want to run a liveCD all the time except that I can't install the plugins I need for watching hulu .  Notice I do use my desktop as a media center as well.

Re: Choosing a WM?

Personally I like tiling window managers; you might also since you speak of using the console a lot.

And welcome, from another Central Florida user.  big_smile

Openbox certainly isn't a bad choice. You already know it, it's extremely customizable, and very popular among Arch users.

Re: Choosing a WM?

I'd suggest a tiling WM. I personally use Wmii but many people here use xmonad and Awesome as well.

Re: Choosing a WM?

Hmm for some time you live with console and tiling wm's are not problem for you smile
Openbox is good, but if you like to have minimalistic WM i suggested to use tiling wm's becouse some of them can float just like other wm's like Openbox smile
