1. you should be using a mirror.
2. arch only uses the ftp server at the ftp.archlinux.org ip, not the http server.
3. your dig syntax is wrong: "dig ftp.archlinux.org"
4. this has always been the case (with http://ftp.archlinux.org going somewhere else)

1. you should be using a mirror.
I'm using a mirror. But I was searching for:
source=(wpa_conf.diff http://ftp.archlinux.org/other/netcfg/netcfg-$pkgver.tar.gz)I did not found this file on other mirrors!
2. arch only uses the ftp server at the ftp.archlinux.org ip, not the http server.
Have a look in the original netcfg PKGBUILD ?
source=(wpa_conf.diff http://ftp.archlinux.org/other/netcfg/netcfg-$pkgver.tar.gz)4. this has always been the case (with http://ftp.archlinux.org going somewhere else)
Why does the original PKGBUILD point to it ?

bad pkgbuild maybe?
if you look at the pkgbuild: http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/n … iew=markup
no idea how it ever built that way. my guess is that james had the tarball in his local directory when he built it or something. I would submit a bug on it, as the path should be:
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/netcfg/ne … ver.tar.gz

Strange beavior! Now http://ftp.archlinux.org seems to work

whoah! that is indeed weird!
maybe one of the servers is configured differently.
It used to be (last time I was in the know), that the bandwidth for ftp.archlinux.org was just a nice deal Judd Vinet (original founder) had worked out with a company. Arch only used the ftp server at the ips (there were two), and the http server at those ips was just a landing page (some parked domain page thing).
Maybe at some point it got turned into an http version of the ftp root (could well have, as I have no clue about the current status of it all), and now one of the servers is doing something else (catch all http redirect).
right now when i ping ftp.archlinux.org, i get the '209.85.41.144' ip, and i get the ask500 website.
Maybe you are getting the .143 ip now.

I'm using OpenDNS and if I repeatedly "$ping ftp.archlinux.org", sometimes I get .143, sometimes .144. When browsing to 209.85.41.144, I get this; and when browsing to 209.85.41.143, I get this. Also, firefox, opera, arora, and midori (web browsers in general?) seem to alternate between the two as ping does: if I go to http://ftp.archlinux.org, exit the browser, restart the browser... repeat several times, sometimes I get www.ask500people.com and sometimes I get the this. I'm guessing it's some kind of DNS trick where the DNS system randomly selects one server or the other at resolve time (browser's DNS caching keeping the result until exit)? This may explain why bb83 was initially getting www.ask500people.com and then, upon trying again, it inexplicably "worked". This may also explain how netcfg actually built despite the "source=(wpa_conf.diff http://ftp.archlinux.org/other/netcfg/netcfg-$pkgver.tar.gz)" (in other words, pure luck). This would seem to suggest that the two servers are indeed configured differently. If I'm right about the DNS trick thing then it probably doesn't matter what DNS servers one uses (as bb83's first post would seem to evidence).

correct evilsnowball. It is called 'round robin dns'.
