Google Ads on the web sites

You've probably noticed the text ads by Google sitting at the top of the forum and the main web site.

This is an attempt to help alleviate some of the costs I bear for the archlinux servers.  Donations haven't really been working out (zero in the last six months) and I won't be able to afford the costs myself when school starts up again (yay tuition!).

I hope you all understand.  I chose Google because their ads are targeted and non-intrusive, so hopefully they don't annoy too much.

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

Honestly I did not notice them until they were pointed out.   They look like they belong there...  not something always getting in the way.  So, what do we do with them to make Arch money.  Click on them? or is just looking at them sufficient?

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

Well, I'm click'n on them every time I check the forums now, and I'll be sending a donation, if my tax bill is not huge.  I should know within a few weeks.  I'll also talk to my web host when I get home (end of Feb.) and find out how much bandwidth I can donate for mirror purposes.

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

Hi,

should we simply click on the "ads by Google" ?

I don´t know how it works, but if we only use the mirrors e.g. ftp.tu-chemnitz.de, etc... the bandwith costs should fall, or ?

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

What sort of costs are for the bandwidth? I mean, will a 50 dollar donation help? I think alot of people could scrounge up $20 or so dollars to help out. Maybe if you made these costs more public, like hey it costs 100 dollars a month to host arch, please help, or something then people might be more likely to contribute. Just a thought, I'm going to go click on pay pal now smile

Yup, that will definitely help.  Using mirrors takes the load off of the arch servers.

50 bucks is more help than you'd think.  That could pay for a server for two weeks, just from that one donation.  Seriously, even 10 bucks helps, it just takes more donations to get up there.

A big thanks to the 6 or 7 people that donated yesterday/today.  I've created a "Donations" page on the website to list the people that have helped us out with costs.

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

About the other possibility of helping : do you have a feeling what the requirements for a mirror are ?
Storage and especially bandwidth ? What about the CD-only mirrors ? Any idea how much bandwidth they need ?

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

Also, just a thought, what if you put a thermometer type display (or something to that affect) on the front page to indicate what percentage of yearly costs are being covered with donations, google ad revernues, etc.... Something like 30% of target donations recieved for this year.

Don't know just an idea.

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

I did it, I've sent 50$ through Paypal. I want you to keep this project up for years to come. Now tell me what mirrors should I use to save your bandwith costs.

Greetings

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

copied from the top of /etc/pacman.conf

# To re-sort your mirror lists by ping/traceroute results, use the
# /usr/bin/sortmirrors.pl script. It requires the "netselect" package.
#
# # sortmirrors.pl </etc/pacman.conf >pacman.conf.new

Then copy /etc/pacman.conf.new to /etc/pacman.conf

Another thing i do is then edit /etc/pacman.conf and be sure that the same mirror is used for current and extra, probably not necassary, but it gives me a warm fuzzy about consistancy wink

That's why I specielly advised in my German AL HowTo to put the ftp.tu-chemnitz.de server on the top in the list in /etc/pacman.conf - and in addition it's also faster for German users.  smile

I didn't even know you could donate and hadn't thought about it. But I just donated 20US dollars. I love Arch and use it every day on my laptop both at home and in school.

Re: Google Ads on the web sites

I feel bad: my router has Squid with AdZap installed. I don't see the ads. When I do see them (on a different computer) I regularly click them tho. smile
