I decided to install arch linux, so I followed the beginners guide. I first updated the system with pacman. Then I installed xorg and the ati opensource drivers. After that I installed ttf-ms-fonts, ttf-dejavu, ttf-bitstream-vera, and finally xfce4. I edited the ~/.xinitrc file and uncommented startxfce4. Now when I run either startx or startxfce4 I get a unreadable error message that looks like a dialog from xfce4. It just looks like a bunch of boxes and a cancel button not readable. The only thing to do at the error is to hit enter, I then get another choice error I guess that is unreadable. I Finally get a dialog that is unreadable telling me it is closing I guess because of the close icon. It then takes me back to console. There are no EE errors in xorg.0.log file but In console it says
dbus_g_proxy_call: assertion 'DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed" a few times and xfconf_init() must be called before attempting to use libxfconf

First of all!

Is this a problem in just xfce ? Did you try binary driver from ATI, or in radeon, or vesa driver ?
