lost my grub

i have lost my grub boot loader after windows 7 install , here is how my hard drive looks

/sda6 is VAR
/sda7 is boot

/sda1 and /sda2 are primary rest are extended ..how can i reinstall grub? I have ubuntu 8.10 live cd

P.S find /boot/grub/stage1 does not work, i am out of ideas

Are you using ext4 for your boot partition? If so you need to have a livecd that has grub patched for that (like the latest arch livecd).

Otherwise just use any livecd (like the Ubuntu one) and run as root:

grub
root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0)
quit

Reboot and it should be good. You'll also want to modify your /boot/grub/menu.lst to boot windows after, but that should get your linux back up.

/boot is ext2 rest all linux partition are ext4
