Hi all, I tried arch on new years day this year, but i couldn't get X11 to work. so i forgot about it and installed fedora. however, i want to try arch again but would like some advice on whether my computer can run it. I have a 1 Ghz Pentium 3 lappy with 256mb ram. would arch run faster than fedora on my computer? just need some advice before i hit the road. thanks.

Thanks. Downloading right now and gonna install it tomorrow...

It will work. Just don't use anything RAM-intensive like KDE.

XFCE should run great on that system. As should any of the other lightweight WMs.

If you can stick some more RAM into the thing, that would be useful.

I recommend LXDE or any other WM-only setup (like one of the *boxes). XFCE would work too. It should run great.

thanks for the the help everyone. i'm still going to try kde 4.2 because it ran great with fedora on my laptop. if it runs well with fedora, it should run much faster with arch, right? i do have another 256mb RAM chip lying around, but it's useless because the second and only free slot in my laptop melted. :\

Why not try kdemod ?

I have a 700MHz P3, 384MB RAM, pathetic video card laptop that Arch runs great on. Didn't even try KDE 4 (not to say it won't work) but minimal KDEmod 3.5 works fairly fast. I'll be switching to WM-only soon on it.

does kdemod have kde 4.2 or is it only kde 3.5? kde 4.2 ran really well on my fedora installation.
