Problem installing grub to usb stick

I'm trying to install grub to my usb stick. Currently I'm following this tutorial http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/grub_intro but I've already tried many others. The problem is that when I run

find /boot/grub/stage1

in the grub shell the usb device doesn't appear. I only get entries for partitions on my computer's hard disk and not an entry for my usb stick.

P.S. I've also tried running

sudo grub-install --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/USBDRIVE /dev/sdc

with no luck either
