Window placement

So...I love GNOME. That said, one of the last things I discovered when using Windows was that NVIDIA had an option to divide up the screen into what were (I think) subscreens. Then, you could tell an application to maximize in subscreen 1, or subscreen 2, or just use the whole thing. Does GNOME have some extension or plugin to do the same kind of thing? My essentials would just be a splitting of my workspace into a top-left, bottom-left, and a right. I imagine people have already done this, but I have no idea what it's actually called. Unfortunate days when not knowing the proper name for something inhibits the ability to find it - like IP Masquerading.

Re: Window placement

It just occurred to me that I posted that foolishly. I meant to say that I love compiz, and is there any compiz extension or plugin to do as I said. I'm pretty noobish, but I know the difference...I think :-P.

Re: Window placement

You're looking for something like tiling.  I use wmii, so I'm rather ahead of you there... but since you favor compiz, there is a Tile plugin you might try.  It isn't quite what you're looking for (I think).  Also, you might be able to fiddle with the Window Placement plugin to make it "work" for you.  I don't think there's any way to maximize a window without it covering the whole screen, though.

Re: Window placement

Try the grid plugin for compiz. It allows you very quickly to divide
the screen either vertically or horizontally.

Re: Window placement

Madalu, the grid plugin was perfect. Was being the operative word. I recently eliminated my lower panel, and the window tiling is no longer the seamless tiling I was used to. Now there are seams a good eight to twelve pixels wide. Anyone else use the grid plugin have a way around this?

Re: Window placement

it does that when resizing terminals, because the terminals are not resized in pixels but in lines/characters. that's supposed to be this way, otherwise it might chop of lines/characters.
for other windows (nautilus, firefox...) there is no gap.
