I have 100 Gb of music, 25,000 files...
When I run mpd to make a database it gets a little more than halfway through before crashing with a segmentation fault. During the database population there are a few ffmpeg errors. Is there a way I can trouble shoot this or fix it? Thanks.

Could you post the exact error ? Does it work with lesser music file, smaller space ?
What does the syslog contain? What's the ooops message ? What mpd client do you use ?

Are you running mpd-git?
You should file a bug report upstream.

Ok, after going through the arch wikipage and redoing the mpd config files, I no longer have a segmentation fault. But now there is another problem. When I create the database only one folder in my music library loads. (The very first one)
All the mp3's have the error: ffmpeg: failed to open /home/meskarune/media/music/rock/band/album/file.mp3
And all the m4a files have the error: mp4_load_tag: Failed to open file: /home/meskarune/media/music/Classic Rock and pop/band/album/file.m4a
ffmpeg: failed to open /home/meskarune/media/music/Classic Rock and pop/band/album/file.m4a
I have all the codecs installed. I tried doing this which was suggested from the wiki article:
chmod a+x /home/meskarune
chmod -R a+x /home/meskarune/media/music
This didn't help. Someone with a similar problem is listed here: http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showt … ?t=1164054
The OP ended up solving it by deleting user mpd from the config....but I didn't think that would be a good idea. Won't that run mpd as root? Another user suggested changing all the permissions in home to 775...
I'm guessing this is a permission issue. Advice would be helpful.

What version of MPD are you running? Not that it helps, but I'm not having any problems here and I am using SSHFS to access my 200gb drive which is only music.

Well, back to your permission problem, mpd runs as my user and I don't have any problems. In the mpd config just set the user to your username. Also are you using the /etc/mpd.conf or a /home/username/.mpdconf . I found that, at least for me, I had to have the latter to get MPD working.

Yeah, I currently have mpd as user mpd and I'm using /etc/mpd.conf . I'll switch it to my user and /home/username/.mpdconf and see if that helps. Thanks
