Hoy there, gang.
I noticed that when I plug my old Creative Zen in with the USB cable, it begins charging in Arch, yet it does not charge in such a manner on Windows. Why is there this difference in behaviour?

Welcome to the forums.
Simply put: There's something wrong with your Windows install. I have no idea what, but your player should charge when plugged in. On second though, it shouldn't rely at all on the OS. You should be able to charge your player with a toaster if it has the right connection.

Thanks! Glad to be here!
Well, this is a Zen Touch, which I have had for approximately five years, and across several different computers, it has never charged via the USB cable, but now it suddenly does with Arch, which is on a computer that dual boots with Windows, where it does not charge.
Shall we just chalk this one up to be a mystery?

I think that you may have contracted the "Windows" virus. I highly recommend a complete repartition and reformat of the area where this virus resides.

skottish: That is my plan: by the end of the Summer, I intend to have installed Wine and moved all of my games and programs to Arch.
pyther: It will die when docked if it does not have the AC power supply plugged in as well, and does nothing when it is turned off. In Arch, if it is turned off, the small charging animation is displayed.

I've had this experience, too, with my Sansa. I think it's because Windows doesn't try to mount it unless it's a device it's using or knows how to use. Linux is fine just pushing power through it and waiting for something to pick it up, but I don't think Windows works the same way. At least that's how I rationalized it before. :-/

Well, like I noted, even when the player is 'docked' with Windows Media Player, it can run out of energy and die if it is not plugged in to the AC adapter.
An interesting note is that my friend purchased a video Zen a couple of years later, and it did charge through the USB. I guess that the only logical conclusion could be that Windows is not designed to charge models from 2004, though it makes little sense, since this device is quite capable of doing so.

Yes, but I noticed the player charging in Linux while it was not connected to Rhythmbox, and turned off. I was just commenting that it does not charge in Windows, connected to WMP or turned off.
