Hi there,
it's me again. Man, I'm creating many posts today. I hope you bear with me. ^^
So, here we go. I've installed Arch on my Dell Latitude D620 Laptop. I've followed the Beginners Guide and installed Alsa. I could also hear the friendly alsa lady say "Front Center".
However, when I boot my machine I get the following error message:
Unknown hardware: HDA-Intel SigmaTel STAC 9200
Hardware is initialized using a guess method
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control: 1256 failed to obtain info for control #6 (no such file or directory)
I then did my googling and found these two articles:
http://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/sho … p?t=616845
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51246
So I added the following line to my /etc/modprob.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m22
That didn't work, I still get the error message.
In my /etc/rc.conf the modules look like this:
MODULES=(slhc tg3 snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel
soundcore !pcspkr !snd_pcsp !bcm43xx ndiswrapper)
Does anybody know what I should do next or can explain the problem to me? Why can I hear the test sound, although my sound chip is obviously not recognized correctly?
TIA,
Blackhole
P.S.: Man, this Linux migration is a ride. Never had so much fun again since my Windows 95 bluescreens.

Did you run alsactl as root?
sudo alsactl store

After the recent update alsa totally stopped working and no sound in both Acer (Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)) and Lenovo 3000 N100 (Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)) laptop. hal working fine. Now oss is working fine currently in both laptops . Any Idea why alsa failed ?. log files did not say anything about this. alsamixer did not display the pcm bar. is a bug report to be filed?
Edit: for typo.../after oss in Acer

Thanks for the post. I too was getting that annoying unknown hardware error w/ my intel hda sound after upgrading to 2.6.30. After reloading alsaconf and alsactl store it was gone on the next reboot.
