Try writing the full path for mplayer in the options /usr/bin/mplayer, then it should work. I had a similiar problem with gnome-mplayer, and this fixed it somewhat.
But, to stay more on-topic; does VLC work with SSA subtitles properly now or what?

Hmm, I wonder...
Try demuxing the video file and see if there's any fonts inside. If so, install them and then see if VLC works okay.

I've been working with my version of VLC-git (VLC-git-libass) that is basically VLC-git with the libass support, and it has been working flawlessly until now...

The package libass that was in AUR has been changed to extra, so the support to libass in the VLC package could now be implemented.
So now the VLC package in extra brings libass support from origin

Downloaded abs upgrade........vlc upgrade included.
Attempted to makepkg vlc with dependency --enable-libass...
Failed as follows:
bash-4.0# makepkg --asroot PKGBUILD

bash-4.0#
Is libass missing in extra?
Edit sp.
Edit: Found the PKGBUILD for libass so disregard this post.
