My Computer has Never Shut Down Correctly Ever!

Hello, I got a computer about six months ago, and as far as I can remember, it has never correctly shutdown after I have told it to do so.

I have a dual boot system, archlinux and windows xp, and neither of them have correctly shutdown the computer ever.  I have tried probably every software means of shutdown.  Special bloody shutdown buttons in windows.  Poweroff, init0, shutdown, you name it, in archlinux.  I have also meddled with the bios and tried all the options that look like they might be useful.

The computer SEEMS to shutdown, then the silly blue light at the front goes bing and then it reboots.  The only way is to force a shutdown by turning the power switch off at the back of the computer or the mains, or holding the power button down for a while. (After shutting down)

I know this is not really an archlinux problem , but, well, I like these forums smile

Anyone got any troubleshooting advice?  I'm sure I could generate some exciting system info reports for you! smile

Thanks!

P.S.  I think I technically mean "power down" instead of "shutdown" above.  But you get the idea...

Sounds like BIOS to me. You should have a section in your BIOS dealing with power
issues - look for something like 'Resume on mouse', this causes your 'puter to power up
if you move the mouse. There is also 'Resume on keyboard', 'Resume on LAN' etc...

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but do you get the idea ?

'sudo shutdown -h now' - forgetting the '-h' can lead to funny behaviour in some distributions; as for the Windows issue, I don't have a clue.

Re: My Computer has Never Shut Down Correctly Ever!

I tried those remedies already sad

shutdown -h now still restarts sad

Disabling all the "power on lan/keyboard/mouse" still restarts sad

(puts on sherlock holmes hat) Surely this is not going to be an OS-specific problem?  Because it happens in archlinux, xp, vista, windows 7 beta, and ubuntu (all of which have been on the hard drive, in various combinations, including by themselves, since I got this computer). hmm

It's not really a major problem, I guess...It's just that I...Hate it when stuff won't do what I tell it to do!!!

Grr!

If you can get it from the support section of the computer manufacturer, get the flash to reflash your bios from the windows install and reboot.
If it's a Dell, it's easy.
And since it's only six months old, it should still be under warranty.

Yes sounds like it could be a bios problem.  Get latest bios if possible and flash it.

As deej suggested try to unplug your mouse and network than halt your pc. If doesn't work, try to unplug keyboard and shutdown. See if it gets on again.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

It could be a CMOS problem, like it might not be able to keep the PCs internal clock properly and assume the shutdown was a power failure and try to reboot

Do you have an ATI video card? That's exactly what my machine does when I use my Radeon 2400 Pro. (One of the many reasons I don't use it...)

Re: My Computer has Never Shut Down Correctly Ever!

Did you guys try to disable every wake on something option? And also the one to wake up at a certain time?
I could also suspect the power status after a power failure .... I would set it to off. Which PSU brand and model are you guys using (try to find common things inside the your machines to try and reach a solution)?
I guess that if this was a common problem the manufacturers would have solved it by now.
