A new wiki..

I have searched for a while to find a wiki that fulfilled my relatively simple needs:

Easy syntax
User logins that work and are persistent (settings saved, password, etc)
Portable (this means written in a language that is installed lots of places)
Works with more than one database
Not super slow
Not a pain in the butt to install/configure
Easily themeable

So..I have decided to try my hand at writing one.
roll

Not much done so far, just some docs and some mockups. Stay tuned and see if I get anywhere.
wink

LOL  roll
That's kind of funny because IMO there are so many os wiki/cms projects and people still can't find a good one. There must be something wrong about this...

Are you sure that you want to make another one? ;-)

Did you try the most popular systems like tikiwiki, typo3, xoops, drupal, mambo or metadot?

Re: A new wiki..

*shrug*
It will give me a chance to brush up on my php5.
It likely will not amount to much, but it might be fun nevertheless.

I was expeting this answer when presented at User Project Discussion. There are many wikis but all having more or less same features or are too complicated. There is a need for a new wiki with new useful features. If we get, then we can replace Arch Wiki (phpWiki --> no PHP 5, no spam protection, pages are not organized and limited search engine).

I just wonder if all those wiki developers thought the same when they started to code ;-)

I'm not against this idea really.
Sure, we could have wiki that works well with all of arch stuff.
And definietly it's a good coding practice.

Good luck cactus!
I'll try to keep an eye on the user project discussion forum.

Maybe not, why then "re-invent the wheel". I think many of them wanted to do on their own not checking what're already around. Maybe not wanting to know.... to be the new "inventor". wink Or didn't know, or guided by that nice feeling "let me also contribute something".

In Internet we find lot of duplicated/similar free softwares. Its a good thing but sometime frustrating when not finding anything new. New things are usually developed if an existing software (or any object) is improved e.g.  many of Japanese electronic products are based on German, UK and USA inventions. Original inventions are developer not user oriented, taking all energy and difficult to "see" what the users actually want.

To get the free software inventions improved and for the users' liking, there could be a search page similar to DistroWatch (publishing all distros).
